Blackjack Basic Strategy
Overview
This module teaches basic blackjack strategy through a small set of focused scenarios. Learners are presented with two common situations and guided through the decision-making process for each. The module concludes with a short quiz to reinforce the concepts.
Learning Goal
The goal of the module is to help learners make correct decisions based on the dealer’s up card.
Problem & Approach
Blackjack strategy is often taught through memorization of charts, which can be difficult for beginners to retain and apply. This module instead presents strategy as a set of simple heuristics, reducing complexity and making the content more approachable. Each decision is paired with an explanation of the underlying reasoning to support deeper understanding and retention.
Instructional Design
The module uses scenario-based interactions with a deliberately limited scope to maintain focus and avoid cognitive overload. For each scenario, the learner is presented with:
- an example hand
- a guideline to follow
- the reasoning behind the guideline
- an illustration of how the decision plays out
The final quiz presents similar scenarios and asks learners to apply what they’ve learned, with immediate feedback provided for each response.
